Who is Lord Indra?
Lord Indra is a powerful Vedic deity symbolizing leadership, rain and divine justice, but also a reminder that ego must be surrendered to the Supreme Lord Vishnu. Lord Indra rules over Swarga Loka (heaven) for a fixed time period, and each Indra is replaced after that period ends. Lifespan of one Indra = 1 Manvantara, which is 306.72 million human years. after every Manvantara, a new Indra is appointed.
Once a great wise Sage was visited by a king curious about life and destiny, and while talking, the sage noticed an ant crawling nearby, smiled and said: "This tiny ant was once a mighty king Indra.... but now look at him". The sage further explained: This ant has gone through thousands of births - king, poor man, animal and even Indra - but due to karma and ego, he fell and rose again and again.
One of the beautiful conversations from Bhagavata purana Lord Krishna told Rukmini Devi "Thousands of Indras have come and gone. Each thought his power would last forever. But time consumes all. Even Indra, the king of heaven, is not free from the cycle of birth and death."
Lord Krishna further told Rukmini Devi that "Do not be attached to greatness, beauty, or position. Everything is temporary. But devotion to the Lord brings eternal peace."
Thus, by surrendering to the Supreme Lord Madhav (Krishna), can one escape the endless cycle of birth and death.
